DIBt-Certification for the Cured-in-Place Pipe (CIPP) Process "I.S.T. Liner"

Since June 2007, the cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) process "I.S.T. Liner" by I.S.T. Liner...

Since June 2007, the cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) process "I.S.T. Liner" by I.S.T. Liner GmbH, 44795 Bochum (Germany) now possesses the general building authority approval by the German Institute of Building Technology (DIBt) for the rehabilitation of directly buried drains and sewers in the nominal size range of 100 to 300 mm. The approval number is Z-42.3-414.

Based on a cold-setting ("Easy Pox 3008") and thermosetting ("Easy Pox T 0530") variant of epoxy resin, the user is able to choose the most competitive "Easy Pox" resin type depending on the object. So, on the one hand, the user has enough time for the impregnation and the inversion process, but on the other hand, no unnecessary waiting times develop regarding the curing time. With the thermo-reactive resin "Easy Pox T 0530" curing times of less than an hour (with thermal curing) can be achieved with a processing time of after all 5 hours. This is why for this type of resin there is currently no competitive product available and why it presents a highly interesting and economic alternative for the professional.
All types of resin by I.S.T. Liner GmbH are free of styrol and therefore allow the user to dispense with an external foil, so the liner can adhere to the old pipe. Additionally, due to the excess resin it can partially enter a mechanically physical bond.

Furthermore, the great number of cured-in-place liner types by I.S.T. Liner comprehensively covers nearly all requirements regarding chemical and mechanical durability, easy soaking behaviour, good invertability, partial bridging of a difference in dimensioning and partially good passing of bends due to different emphases of the products. As regards the liner, the polyester fibre tubes "ThermoLiner" and "ThermoLiner plus" are the subject of the DIBt-Certification. The latter product is marked by its very good behaviour in bends of up to 87°; the alteration of length is very low despite the radial extensibility.

Besides the liner systems, the entire range of equipment for liner installation can also be purchased from one source supplemented by the corresponding training and instructions. They include vacuum pumps, tables for impregnation, inversion drums, camera units, milling robots, hot water aggregates as well as steam generators of different dimensions, for example.
The cured-in-place liner systems are supplemented by a corresponding range of felt- or glass-based top hat sleeves as well as the corresponding packer systems for top hat sleeves.

ThermoLiner plus – The Highly Flexible Liner for negotiating sharp bends and dimension variations in house connections

The use of flexible tube liners in the rehabilitation of house connection pipes has taken hold...

The use of flexible tube liners in the rehabilitation of house connection pipes has taken hold as a technically mature alternative to costly “dig-out” repairs. Frequently, those house connection pipes that are in need of repair have not been installed in a professional manner. They commonly have sharp bends that are impassable for many of the liner systems prevalent in the industry. Frequently, a substitute is used that fails to produce satisfactory results.

ThermoLiner plus from I.S.T. Liner GmbH in Bochum, Germany allows for the rehabilitation of pipe profiles containing obstructive bends as acute as 87°. As well, the liner can be installed in pipes with variations in dimension.

This versatile liner system with a wall thickness of approximately 3.5 millimetres (under a pressure of 0.3 bar [4.4 psi]) consists of polyester needled felt coated with polyurethane (i.e. PU). The liner tube places at the disposal of the professional technician a highly-specialised product with which to rehabilitate house connection pipes and ducts containing several bends. With ThermoLiner plus, such challenges can be handled quickly and at reduced cost.

ThemoLiner plus is manufactured at our headquarters in Bochum and offered in diameters of 100, 125, 150 and 200 millimetres (4 – 8˝) and rolls of 50 or 100 metre (164 – 328´) lengths. The seam, sewn together and sealed with thermo-bonded tape that is 25 millimetres (1˝) wide, can easily withstand pressures within the recommended range of 0.2 to 0.4 bar (2.9 – 5.8 psi). Exposed ends of the liner are protected by following the appropriate guidelines.

The inverted liner traverses bends and other obstacles in the pipe very smoothly due to its ultra-soft polyurethane transfer coating. With its enhanced stretching capability, one need not be concerned about cavities at the periphery between the liner and the old pipe wall.

The inner side of the liner is altogether free of wrinkles once the impregnated resin has cured. Due to the expansive, exceptionally flexible polyester needled felt composition, the radial elasticity of ThermoLiner plus is so high that a pipe containing a jump in diameter to the next-larger width can be lined smoothly using the same tube.

In addition, the special structure of the liner tube felt allows for very good impregnation of Easy Pox and Easy Lith® resin using a vacuum pump. The numerous varieties of resin from I.S.T. Liner, including several two-component reaction resins based on epoxy, allow for very flexible work on job sites. Their viscosity is optimally tuned to the capillarity of the ThermoLiner plus felt. I.S.T. Liner has four ambient-curing and two thermoset epoxy resins available to its customers,
each with different setting and curing times. Employing this assortment, the installation professional has the flexibility to compensate for various job site conditions, pipe dimensions and preferred curing temperatures (up to + 80 °C [+ 176 °F]).

As an interesting alternative to epoxy-based resin, I.S.T. Liner offers the silicate resin Easy Lith®, which allows for fast curing of the liner even under ambient conditions. Wherever waste water pipes need to be restored into service very quickly, and especially for the rehabilitation of high-volume pipes otherwise necessitating a costly bypass, the preferred resin solution of many professional service contractors is Easy Lith®.

ThermoLiner plus is one of the elements comprising the proposal for DIBt (German Institute of Construction Technology) certification of I.S.T. Liner GmbH expected by the end of the year 2006.

The assortment of products on offer at I.S.T. Liner besides ThermoLiner plus includes an array of liner systems for optimising effort and accommodating specific circumstances:

FlexLiner
PVC-coated liner • Ambient or thermoset curing up to + 50 °C (+ 122 °F)
Available in Ø 100 to Ø 300 mm (4 – 12˝) ▪ Wall thickness: 3.5 or 5 mm

ThermoLiner
PU-coated liner • Ambient or thermoset curing up to + 80 °C (+ 176 °F)
Available in Ø 150 to Ø 300 mm (6 – 12˝) ▪ Wall thickness: 3 or 5 mm

OF Liner
Polyolefin-coated liner • Steam curing liner up to + 115 °C (+ 239 °F)
Available in Ø 150 to Ø 1000 mm (6 – 40˝) ▪ Wall thickness: 2 to 21 mm

SoftLiner
PU-coated liner • Ambient or thermoset curing up to + 80 °C (+ 176 °F)
Available in Ø 100 to Ø 300 mm (4 – 12˝) ▪ Wall thickness: 2 or 3.5 mm

BendiLiner
Elastic, PU-coated liner • Ambient or thermoset curing up to + 50 °C (+ 122 °F)
Available in Ø 100/125/150 mm (4/5/6˝) ▪ Wall thickness: 2.5 mm

The system is completed by a variety of calibration tubes, each of which can be used under ambient or thermoset curing conditions up to a temperature of + 80 °C (+ 176 °F).

As a “One-Stop Shop” in pipe rehabilitation, I.S.T. Liner offers practical training for professional service contractors in the preparation and installation of house connection liners. Theoretical as well as practical elements are incorporated into the coursework. Completion of the training is acknowledged by the certification of all active participants.

DIBt Certification for the Easy Pur “Spot Repair” Partial Lining System

Partial lining has established itself over many years for the isolated repair of inaccessible waste...

Partial lining has established itself over many years for the isolated repair of inaccessible waste water pipes as an economical and technically mature alternative solution to traditional “dig-out” repairs.
As of March 2006, the partial lining “Spot Repair System” from I.S.T. GmbH in Bochum, Germany has been granted General Technical Approval from the German Institute of Construction Technology (i.e. DIBt). License number Z-42.3-388 certifies approval of the system for the rehabilitation of buried, damaged waste water pipes in pipes ranging from 100 to 500 millimetres in diameter.

Due to its versatility and practicality, the “Spot Repair System” works according to the individual wishes of the contracting company and its employees. As opposed to the properties of typical summer and winter resins offered by other manufacturers, the “Spot Repair System” enables a uniquely flexible partial lining procedure employing a three-component silicate isocyanate resin system called Easy Pur. The three components consist of resin, curing agent and a catalyst which influences the reaction time of each mixture.

As a result, all relevant parameters can be compensated for, in particular the surrounding conditions, pipe dimensions and distance from the manhole to the damaged spot. The system even allows for the possibility to remove a packer within thirty minutes! On the other hand, a setting time as long as sixty minutes can be accommodated. The physical and chemical properties, impregnation procedure, adhesive qualities and smooth, homogeneous surface of the cured liner clearly exceed the products currently on offer by the competition.

In its packaging options, as well, I.S.T. GmbH offers cost-effective alternatives to their standard Easy Pur canister bundles in the form of combination cans and tubular resin bags. These are appreciated by customers who carry out partial liner installations less frequently. A two-component (resin and curing agent/catalyst) variety of Easy Pur named Easy Pur 2k is used in the small quantities filling the cans and bags, but also available in 70-kg canister bundles. The tubular resin bag/pouch is available in four different sizes with the two components separated by a seal. Once the seal is broken, the components can be mixed by hand inside the pouch and the mixed resin poured from an opening cut from the bag.

When it comes to glassfibre matting, I.S.T. corresponds with the best available technology, naturally, offering corrosion-resistant Advantex glassfibre. Consisting of ECR-quality fibreglass fabric and non-woven fibre matting sewn together, it is available in a variety of weights and widths.

In order to achieve successful and durable repairs, it is vital to strictly comply with the installation instructions from the manufacturer. Explicit attention should be paid to the necessary conditions regarding preparation of the substrate for successful installation of a partial liner. Smooth and/or slippery pipes (e.g. glazed ceramic liner), in particular, should be chafed beforehand in addition to the usual high pressure water spray cleaning so as to effect a more solid and lasting bond to the pipe wall.

During the lamination process, the glassfibre matting should be folded so as to expose the dull (i.e. non-glossy), non-woven fibre surface to the wall of the old pipe (including the overlapping edge) as well as to the inside of the pipe.

In addition, it is important to ensure that the width of the installed liner is at least 3 millimetres. To realize this, the finished liner should consist of anywhere from two to four layers depending on the variety of glassfibre matting used.

Partial liners adhere more strongly to the old pipe as sectional tube liner does. With a sufficient thickness of glassfibre matting together with the manufacturer-recommended quantity of reaction resin, the pressing of a partial liner (1 to 2 bar depending on the job conditions) against the old pipe by a mobile packer causes “surplus resin” to permeate into cracks as well as the crevices in sleeves. Beyond the primary bond, this augments the grip of the liner to the old pipe and/or damaged spot.

Furthermore, a wedge of miniscule thickness is developed at the edges of the liner that offers the foreign bodies and sands common to waste water no gap by which to attach to the liner. This characteristic effectively prevents such stresses from causing mid- to long-term stripping away of the liner.

It cannot be emphasized enough how the success of each and every partial lining installation is absolutely dependent, beyond use of the highest quality products, upon the knowledge and precision of the participating technicians and their adherence to the manufacturer instructions.

It is for this reason that I.S.T. GmbH regularly offers practical training at its headquarters for professional installation contractors and their job site personnel. The training courses include a theoretical component which compliments, and provides a basis for, the practical aspects. The completion of each course is acknowledged by certification for all participants.

Lastly, authorities responsible for tenders should ensure that substrates are adequately prepared and contracts taken on by qualified professional service companies using proper equipment. This should be addressed in the tender documentation and furthermore upon award of the contract. In this way alone is it possible to utilize excellent equipment successfully to effect the flexible and cost-effective installation of partial liners.
